DIY Ghost Pinafore Costume for Kids | Easy Halloween Tutorial (FREE PATTERN)

DIY Ghost Pinafore Costume for Kids | Easy Halloween Tutorial (FREE PATTERN) Summary This ghost pinafore was such a fun and cozy project for my daughter’s first real Halloween. It’s an easy beginner sewing project using a free pattern and can be customized with felt or vinyl details. If you’re looking for a simple, budget-friendly kids costume, this is a great place to start! Storytime! This year is my daughter’s very first time trick-or-treating! Last year, she was still a baby — adorable, of course, but we decided to skip going door-to-door since it felt a little awkward with just two adults and a tiny pumpkin in tow. Now that she’s older, we’re making the most of Halloween! Since we live in the Midwest (where the weather can never decide between fall and winter), I wanted to make her a costume that would be comfortable, easy to layer, and still super cute. 3 Beginner-Friendly Tips for Sewing Knits Without a Serger

3 Beginner-Friendly Tips for Sewing Knits Without a Serger

Knits can be intimidating as you start to learn to sew, especially if you don't have a serger. And let's be honest, they aren't exactly cheap. But you don't need fancy equipment to get started sewing comfortable, stretchy clothes! With a few tips and your regular machine, you'll be sewing knits in no time.

Knits are different from the cotton most beginners start with. They’re soft, stretchy, and like to move around. But they’re also super versatile, vibrant, and perfect for summer clothes or anything you make your little one.

Here Are My 3 Tips to Help You Sew Knits!

1. Use a Stretch Needle and Zigzag Stitch.

Stretch Needles I Use

A stretch needle is designed specifically for knit fabric without skipping stitches or damaging the material. Using an universal needle might seem fine at first, but over time your seams can break.

Pairing it with a zigzag stitch (or any other stretch stitch), and the stitch will move and stretch with your fabric. This can prevent your stitches from snapping, like a straight stitch would, resulting in a longer-lasting garment.

2. Don't Pull! Guide The Fabric.

Knit fabric, unlike  cotton fabric, you don't want to pull as you sew. If you do, your fabric will ripple and lead to uneven stitching. Keep one hand gently guiding in front and the other holding the fabric straight behind the needle.

Guide! Don't pull.

3. Don't Skip Backstitching!

It’s always important to backstitch, no matter your project, but is crucial with knits. Since knits are meant to stretch with movement, it causes extra stress on your seams. If you don't secure your stitches, they can come undone over time.

Make sure to reverse and the beginning and end of your seam to lock everything in and keep your clothes lasting longer!

I hope these simple tips help you start with sewing with knits. Stretchy fabric can feel tricky at first, but once you get used to it, it’s a rewarding and budget-friendly way to expand your handmade wardrobe. Good luck!
