DIY: Easy Baby Headband
Welcome to the Little Stitches Blog!
Introduction
Hello! My name is Courtney and I run Little Stitches Blog. I have been actively sewing for the last 10 years; sewing anything from clothes for myself to bags to gifts for family. I am self-taught, but have been taking more advanced sewing classes to build on my skills. I also currently teach beginner sewing classes out of my house.
I’ve been wanting to write a blog for a few years now, but couldn’t decide on what I wanted to write about. Do I focus on sewing clothes for yourself? Sewing tips? Then on March 29th, 2024, I gave birth to my beautiful baby girl and later decided to create a blog dedicated to sewing children’s clothing. I wanted a way to not only document what I made for my daughter, but also to teach other people how to sew.
It has been a dream of mine to make clothes for my children. To see her run around and go about her day in clothes that I made them. Even to have them help me design and sew clothes for them.
On my blog you’ll be able to find tutorials, pattern reviews, pattern sew-alongs, sewing tips and tricks, beginner guides, and links to free and easy patterns you can complete on your own. While I will be focusing on children’s clothes, I am willing to include other types of projects to help teach certain techniques and meet requests!
I plan on posting once a week so be on the lookout!
To start off the blog, I thought we could do a really simple sewing project: A DIY Baby Headband.
Tutorial: How to Make a Baby Headband
Little backstory: My sister is having her second baby and I wanted to make her (soon to be) two kids matching outfits! I'm using this cute outdoor dino stretch fabric from Joann's that I found on clearance for her oldest! I had already made the dress (tutorial coming soon) and will be using the same fabric to make the bow with.
Materials:
¼ yard of a 2-way or 4-way stretch fabric
A sewing machine and thread
Scissors
Chalk or pen
Ruler
Pins
Instructions:
First, you're going to measure out your pieces. I am making it big enough for a toddler. Since my fabric is stretchy, it will stretch to fit her head and will be made smaller (make sure to measure and cute your fabric in the direction it stretches for best results!). You want to cut out a 3.5" x 7" (the bow), 3" x 4" (bow knot), and 3" x 15" band for a newborn (17" for a 6 month old, 20" for 1+ years). In the photo, the bow and band are cut on the fold to make the process easier.
Once all your pieces are cut out, fold them horizontally so the nice sides are touching and pin.
Tip: Use a zigzag stitch so your thread won’t snap when you stretch it.
Sew all your pieces where you pinned them. I used a ¼ seam allowance.
Turn all your pieces inside out.
Pin the ends of your handband together and sew!
Now onto your bow!
Make sure your machine is on the straight stitch and the longest stitch length it can go! Take your bow and fold the ends so they meet in the middle. Sew down the middle where the ends meet. DO NOT BACK STITCH! Take one thread and pull until it is slightly gathered; then to hold it together, wrap the thread around the middle.Put the bow on top of the ends of the band. You are going to wrap the bow knot around both of them and pin it closed. Sew! Be careful not to sew the other pieces.
Once you sewed the bow knot, flip it inside out, snip the threads, and you’re done!
That's one way you can make a bow!
