DIY Ghost Pinafore Costume for Kids | Easy Halloween Tutorial (FREE PATTERN)

DIY Ghost Pinafore Costume for Kids | Easy Halloween Tutorial (FREE PATTERN) Summary This ghost pinafore was such a fun and cozy project for my daughter’s first real Halloween. It’s an easy beginner sewing project using a free pattern and can be customized with felt or vinyl details. If you’re looking for a simple, budget-friendly kids costume, this is a great place to start! Storytime! This year is my daughter’s very first time trick-or-treating! Last year, she was still a baby — adorable, of course, but we decided to skip going door-to-door since it felt a little awkward with just two adults and a tiny pumpkin in tow. Now that she’s older, we’re making the most of Halloween! Since we live in the Midwest (where the weather can never decide between fall and winter), I wanted to make her a costume that would be comfortable, easy to layer, and still super cute. That’s how this DIY Ghost Pinafore Costume for Kids came to life! It’s simple, cozy, and perfect for unpredictable fall wea...

5 Affordable and Beginner-Friendly Sewing Projects for Father's Day!

5 Affordable and Beginner-Friendly Sewing Projects for Father's Day!

The time has come to ask the dreaded question once again: What do I get him?

If there is something many of us can agree upon, it's that men are so hard to shop for. And it's even harder when you're trying to gift them something homemade! For many occasions, I rack my brain for months trying to think of something that would check off his list of what makes a good gift.

Is it:

  • useful?
  • funny?

If it hits both, then it's perfect. But it's so hard when you're trying to also gift him something meaningful! Especially when it's for Father's Day.

While my husband has only been a father for a year, he's been fantastic and everything one could want when raising a child together and I want to gift him something that shows my appreciation.

So if you're like me and get stuck too easily, here are 5 free and beginner-friendly sewing project ideas to get you started!

1. Tie/Bowtie

These are perfect for dads who like to dress up with personality or just want something fun to wear to work. My husband works in an office setting and is required to wear a tie to work. But no one said it had to be boring! You can personalize it by choosing a specific fabric or even adding a little embroidery to it.

I love making these for my husband almost as much as he loves showing them off. They also don't take a long time to make either! While making a tie requires some hand sewing, it takes me 2 hours after I got the hang of it!

If he's more of a dress-down kind of guy, try something a little comfier!

2. PJ Pants

Hear me out. I know that pajama pants are a beginner-sewer classic, but who doesn't love something warm and comfy to lounge around the house with? This can be a longer project if you're new to sewing, but it's a great way to learn so many new skills! I highly recommend using flannel or a cotton blend to maximize comfiness.

If you're looking for something a little quicker to sew, then I recommend this next one.

3. Grill Apron

Everyone knows that summertime is grill time. This 2-3 hour project is the perfect gift for our outdoor cooks to help prevent grease stains and is super easy to customize with the kids. A little bit of fabric paint and some heat will keep their designs on for years!

If your guy is more of a homebody, this one's a winner.

4. TV Armrest Organizer

This is a wonderful gift for those who love to enjoy movie night or even those who always seem to ask "where's the remote?" This quick project is also the perfect place to hold extra movie snacks – in case of emergencies of course.

Since Father's Day falls right at the start of summer, this next project is perfect for sunny days.

5. Bucket Hat

Perfect for dads who love to be outside, this makes a great, practical accessory. This quick sew takes about an hour and uses less than half a yard of fabric. I've made one from cotton pj pants I've thrifted and it works great with canvas or even demin (patches anyone?).

No matter what project you choose, homemade gifts add that extra touch of love that make it meaningful. I hope these ideas help you celebrate the dads in your life in a special (and afforable!) way.
